Can Mercy Johnson’s marriage stand the test of time?

By on August 23, 2011

If there is one issue that has dominated public discourse in recent times, as far as the Nigerian entertainment industry is concerned, it is the much-talked about wedding of controversial Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson, to her charming Esan Prince, Odianosen Okojie.

Since the Kogi-born screen diva announced her wedding plans about three months ago, it has been one tale or the other, each competing to outdo the other, just as soft-sell magazines alongside online media have taken advantage of the happenings with outrageous headlines.

While headlines such as “Mercy Johnson Reconciles with Enemies Ahead of Wedding;” “Is Mercy Johnson Pregnant?”; “Mercy Johnson in Distress: Runs to Mountain of Fire for Divine Intervention;” “Mercy Johnson moves into Three-Bedroom Apartment with Fiance”, etc exist, the most disturbing was that which appeared on Linda Ikeji’s blog entitled, “Mercy Johnson’s Wedding Plans Suffer Set-back, as Prince Odianosen’s Wife shows up with Kids.”

To buttress her argument that this is not a laffing matter, the Canadian-based wife released damning pictures to prove her relationship with Prince Okojie, including those of their two kids. In fact, in the photographs, he was lying on a couch on bare chest, carrying the kids; while he was signing the marriage certificate and kissing her in others.

Her words, “My name is Lovely Okojie, legal wife of Prince Odianosen Okojie, the man Mercy Johnson is set to wed…. I used to have a sweet home but now Mercy Johnson is trying to destroy it. I’ve not been able to stop crying or sleep well for the past few months. I’m appealing to the world and whoever knows her to please tell her to leave my husband alone.

“I’m married to this man and there has never been any divorced paper signed. We are still legally married, he’s the love of my life and the father of my two lovely kids. We got married back in2006 inModena,Italy, attached are pictures of the wedding. At the moment, he’s busy inNigeriaplanning to wed Mercy Johnson, abandoning me and our children. Fellow women, is this fair?”

The embattled Okojie, in his reaction, admitted that he used to be in a relationship with Lovely which produced two kids, pointing out that they only did traditional marriage which he did not attend. “The lady in question, her real name is Adaeze, we met inItalya long time ago, then I was living inItaly. We had a relationship, no doubt, she got pregnant. In the course of our affair, she has two kids for me but the truth is we have both moved on with our lives; this truth is known to her,” he said.

Mercy Johnson, on her part, is not strange to controversy. On many occasions in the past, she told anyone who cared to listen that her marriage would hold “soon” only to dash the hopes of her teeming fans who discovered it was a ruse. No sooner had she announced her wedding ceremony sometime in May, she posted pictures where she went shopping for her wedding dress in New York, just as some opined that it was mere effizy or simply put, Shakara.

She, however, added another twist to the saga on Twitter, saying, “Please don’t believe everything you read. I am getting married to an unmarried father.”

Latest report is that a group under the aegis of Society for Nigerian Women, SNW, has written to Christ Embassy, threatening that if the church goes ahead with the wedding, despite Lovely’s evidences and petitions, they (SNW) would mobilize over 5,000 Nigerian women to disrupt the proceedings.

The letter, addressed directly to Pastor Chris Oyakhilome dated August 15th, indicated that after the meeting of the group on August 13th, they decided to react to publications that reported the church had agreed to go ahead with the programme.

It described the decision as “wicked” and “highly immoral that a man will leave his legally married wife and go ahead to marry another woman.”

The letter, signed by one Mrs. Chinyere Okonkwo, President of the group, begged Pastor Chris to rescind his decision in the interest of the innocent children that the groom-to-be abandoned or risk having women demonstrating in front of the Church on the wedding day.

Prince Okojie, however, insisted that the four-day event, scheduled from August 25th  to 28th, will go on as planned, insisting that he is no longer married to Lovely.

Mixed reactions have also trailed the news story: while some of MJ’s fans on the internet blamed Lovely for “acting out a script” by showing up at the eleventh hour of the D-Day, others asked the actress to stop “snatching another woman’s husband.”

Veteran movie producer and director, Chico Ejiro, maintained that despite the reports, the marriage will go on as planned, while labelling Lovely as a gold-digger wanting to reap where she did not sow.

According to him, “Mercy Johnson is the best actress in the Nollywood. I wish her a happy married life in advance. All the bad belle people should keep quiet. Her husband does not have any wife. It is blackmail; they want to distract the beautiful lady.

”She’s a child of God and she is a good Christian. All the bad belle people will die. [take note]. And come 27th August, we will all attend her wedding and rejoice with her; there is no going back at this point in time!”

Whether or not Chico Ejiro has turned to a Man of God, M.O.G or Juju Priest (J.P.), your guess is as good as mine.

But then, come to think of it, of all decent, less controversial, single-and- searching men (including yours truly [Wink! Wink!! Wink!!!]), what on earth would make this Mercy of a girl opt for a life partner whose name is as controversial as 2face Idibia’s? The reason is not far-fetched. The husband-to-be is an oil magnate. Can this be why her family encouraged her to go ahead with the event, despite a barrage of unfavourable media reports? If you ask me, na who I go ask?

Could this also be the reason why some celebrities choose to engage in ‘secret marriage’ so as to be free from wahala of this nature?

Odianosen is also not spared of my Koboko (horse whip); as he may have married the actress not because of her inner beauty but due to her physical assets; one of which is her hypnotizing hips that could make a priest abandon his cassock at the slightest provocation from a swaggalicious female parishioner.
