Naima Adedapo dances to Rihanna’s “umbrella” at the American Idol

By on March 27, 2011

Nigerian native and darling of the judges, Naima Adedapo took a risk and remixed Rihanna’s addictive ‘Umbrella’ with a reggae twist. And that wasn’t all, she also did something rarely seen on American Idol: She performed like an artiste on tour. It wasn’t the usual swanning around on stage singing to the audience that everybody does, she did a little choreography after her reggae rap in the middle of the song.

She has definitely upped the stakes and I feel she is already a star in her own right, and if she does not win the coveted title of American Idol 2011 somebody big  is going to sign her on to their record label: Jay Z, Kanye West, Pharell Williams…. the list goes on. Even Rihanna herself tweeted “Vote for Naima!! Rah! Rah!” after her performance on American Idol. If that isn’t endorsement, I don’t know what is!
I will say though that she was clearly out of breath throughout the performance and her pitch fluctuating a lot. Her attempt at singing and dancing definitely took a toll on her vocals. Nevertheless, her initiative of trying to do more in her performance was not lost on the judges. With some voice-coaching aimed at giving her more stamina to sing and dance, the rest of the contestants should be worried. naima, we are with you ALL THE WAY!
